Calls for the establishment of a fair minimum wage and better working conditions
PASYNO recognizes the struggles of all workers for a better life and a fairer society.
As stated in its announcement, on the occasion of Labour Day, “May 1st continues to be a special day for our union as we honor the struggles of the working class and, in general, of working people.”
“The nursing sector, having engaged over the past decade in struggles to claim the improvement of its rights, including a unique 18-day strike mobilization in 2016, continues to fight for better working conditions for nursing staff,” PASYNO notes.
It also states that “as a union, we focus on improving the current working environment, within which new employees are called to work under conditions of individual devaluation. The absence of a collective agreement allows the downgrading of their rights and leads new entrants to regression and to conditions resembling a labour ‘middle ages’.”
Referring to the financial crisis and the new challenges brought by the war in Ukraine, it emphasizes that “our society over the past 13 years has experienced unprecedented conditions and losses at both social and economic levels as a result of a global economic crisis. As a result of the war, we are now called to face a wave of rising costs and instability due to the energy crisis, the effects of which will be extremely significant for workers and economies.”
“This year’s Labour Day takes on new dimensions, as people’s lives, their dignified living conditions, and their right to a better future are being challenged and undermined daily,” it stresses.
In its message, the union underlines that “as workers, we must unite our voices and fight against any attempt at destabilization that aims at the loss of fundamental labour rights and working conditions. We must claim meaningful labour rights through collective agreements, with decent wages, with the establishment of a fair minimum wage, and with better working conditions. This is the path we must follow.”
